College football: Wolves bit by Dragons
Source: American News, Aberdeen, S.儲存D.Oct. 06--Minnesota State-Moorhead played homecoming spoilers this week.Northern State lost its 94th annual Gypsy Day game 47-46 against Minnesota State-Moorhead on Saturday at Swisher Field in an NSIC North college football game. The Wolves are now 63-28-3 all-time in Gypsy Day games. The Dragons suffered a heartbreaking 36-34 loss against Concordia-St. Paul during their homecoming game last week."We got our homecoming crashed last weekend and we just kind of wanted to do the same thing to somebody else," Moorhead quarterback Jake Hodge said.It was Moorhead's first win this season and it snapped an eight-game losing streak dating back to last season. The Dragons last win was Oct. 13, 2012, vs. Minnesota-Crookston."It is a really big win that could catapult us forward within our program," Moorhead coach Steve Laqua said. "We played a program that we respect. We have seen how they've built it. We've modeled some of the things that we've done off of what they've done. So for us to have a day like today is a little bit extra special."The 93 combined points ties the record for most points scored in a Gypsy Days game. The Wolves lost in double overtime by the exact same score, 47-46, vs. Bemidji State in the 2001 Gypsy Days game. There were seven lead changes and 1,101 total yards in Saturday's game."It was crazy," said Hodge, who had 393 total yards and five total TDs. "It was fun. It went back and forth the entire game. Northern had some big plays. We had some big plays. It was fun."Northern State went ahead 46-32 early in the fourth quarter, after a Taylor Houchin 15-yd TD pass from Jared Jacobson. The 14 points was the largest lead in the game by either team."When you get up by two scores in the fourth quarter, you have to find a way to close it out," Northern State coach Tom Dosch said. "A lot of it right now is the killer instinct and not having the killer instinct."The Dragons cut the deficit to 46-39 after a Brandon Schell 64-yard TD run with nine minutes and 40 seconds left. The NSU offense, which had its best day statistically of the season, failed to pick up a first down on the ensuing possession. The Dragons took over at their own 34-yard line with 7:35 remaining. Hodge orchestrated an 11-play, 66-yard drive that culminated with a Zayne Medhaug 10-yard TD run with 4:01 left."We had quite a bit of time to go and our running game was working good and we just tried working the clock down," Hodge said about the last drive. The Dragons, who were 3-for-6 in point-after-touchdowns on Saturday, elected to go for the two-point conversion after Medhaug's TD. The play was a pass play, but Hodge's favorite target Adam Jiskra was covered. Hodge then ran in the go-ahead two-point conversion."Credit Jake, he made a great play," Laqua said. "There wasn't anything there. He just made something happen. I felt like where we were with our extra points, where we were in our program, we needed to try to make a statement to move us forward and so we did what we did."After the score, the Wolves took over at their own 29-yard line with 3:54 left. NSU moved the ball past midfield and converted two fourth-down plays to keep the drive alive. The second one came on a fourth-and-two from Moorhead's 31 when Jacobson rushed for nine yards to get the first down. Jacobson then threw an interception to Nick Seedorff on the next play and Moorhead was able to run out the clock."I think it caught him off guard," Laqua said about the pick, "because it was right to him and he bobbled it and hemini storagemanaged to still make it. It really threw us for a loop, at least me."The Wolves have now lost three in a row, after winning their first game of the season."It is just a surreal and numb feeling right now," Dosch said. There were eight scoring plays of at least 20 yards or more, including 64-yard and 71-yard TD runs by the Dragons. The Wolves scored a TD on a fake punt by Channing Barber. The Wolves blocked a PAT attempt and defensive back Blaine Schmidt returned it for two points to get NSU within 19-16 with 7:30 left in the first half. NSU went ahead 23-19 on a 54-yard TD run by Terrelle Walker with 3:20 left before halftime."Frustrating, nerve-racking game to coach in, but I can't say enough about how hard both teams played," Laqua said. The Dragons scored 14 straight points in the third quarter to go ahead 32-23. The Wolves then scored 23 straight points to take a 46-32 lead, with the last TD coming with 10:54 left. The Wolves did not score again."We have to keep looking and keep finding ways to do this better," Dosch said, "scheme-wise, personnel-wise, whatever we have to do. We have to get it fixed."Northern State (1-4) will play at Minot State on Oct. 12 in another NSIC contest.Follow @RyanDeal_AAN on Twitter.Moorhead (1-4)... 0 19 13 15--47Northern State (1-4)... 7 16 15 8--46|First Quarter|NSU--John Hughes 22 run (Nathan Shaw kick), 10:25.|Second Quarter|MSUM--Jake Hodge 12 run (Wes Kramer kick), 13:51.MSUM--Hodge 71 run (Kramer kick), 11:27.NSU--Channing Barber 60 run (Shaw kick), 10:22.MSUM--Adam Jiskra 11 pass from Hodge (Kramer kick), 7:30.NSU--Blaine Schmidt blocked PAT return, 7:30.NSU--Terrelle Walker 54 run (Shaw kick), 3:20.|Third Quarter|MSUM--Jiskra 32 pass from Hodge (Kramer kick failed), 12:22.MSUM--Cory Ambrose 17 pass from Hodge (Kramer kick), 7:00.NSU--Connor Doherty 25 pass from Jared Jacobson (Kramer kick), 3:02.NSU--Tanner White 6 pass from Jacobson (Taylor Houchin pass from Jacobson), 00:19.|Fourth Quarter|NSU--Taylor Houchin 15 pass from Jacobson (White pass from Jacobson), 10:54.MSUM--Brandon Schell 64 run (Kramer kick), 9:40.MSUM--Zayne Medhaug 10 run (Hodge rush), 4:01.|MSUM NSUFirst downs...27 20Rushes-yards...39-294 46-354Passing-yards...292 161Comp-Att-Int...30-47-0 11-27-2Total Net Yards...586 515Total plays...86 73Fumbles-Lost...1-1 1-1Penalties-Yards...4-89 3-34Punts-yards...6-211 6-212Kickoffs-Ret Yds...6-139 6-142Punt-Ret Yds...1-0 1-4Third downs...7-17 3-16Fourth downs...2-4 5-5Red zone...4-4 2-4PATs...3-6 4-4Field goals...0-0 0-1|INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS|RUSHING -- Minesota State-Moorhead, Schell 13-136, Hodge 12-114, Medhaug 11-74, Michael Schwichenberg 1-(minus-4); Northern State, Jacobson 17-117, Hughes 15-91, Barber 1-60, Walker 3-51, Stephen Erlandson 9-32, Cameron Pudwill 1-3.PASSING -- Minesota State-Moorhead, Hodge 30-47-0 for 292; Northern State, Jacobson 11-27-2 for 161.RECEIVING -- Minesota State-Moorhead, Jiskra 11-139, Ambrose 10-114, Medhaug 4-18, Shaun Hollenkamp 2-17, Dan Grande 2-1, Logan Romines; Northern State, Doherty 4-108, Houchin 3-32, White 2-10, Jordan Freeman 1-8, Wil Carlson 1-3.DEFENSE -- Minesota State-Moorhead, Sam Callahan 7 tackles, Chris Lee 7 tackles; Northern State, Schmidt 8 tackles, Michael Alberts 8 tackles.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the American News (Aberdeen, S.D.)
