Man waives hearing in Millcreek burglary, escape cases

Source: Erie Times-News, Pa.mini storageOct. 31--An Erie man faces trial on charges in a burglary in Millcreek Township in September and in an escape from the Millcreek police station after his apprehension earlier this month.Steven L. Spearman, 20, waived his preliminary hearings before Millcreek District Judge Paul Manzi in both cases this week. He remains in the Erie County Prison on $65,000 bond.Police accused Spearman and another man, who has not been identified, of breaking into a West Ridge Road residence through a basement window Sept. 24. A safe containing guns, a large amount of cash, some jewelry and personal papers was stolen from the residence, according to investigators.Police later recovered the guns.Investigators said evidence gathered in the case led them to chargeself storageSpearman. An arrest warrant was issued Sept. 25, and he was taken into custody by Erie police on West 17th Street on Oct. 6.Spearman was at the Millcreek police station when police said he broke away from officers while in a holding cell and ran out of the building. Spearman was captured a short distance away from the police station.Spearman faces burglary, theft, conspiracy, criminal trespass and receiving stolen property charges in the burglary case and aggravated assault and resisting arrest charges in the escape case.TIM HAHN can be reached at 870-1731 or by e-mail.
