2013 FOOTBALL PREVIEWS: Wheatland honors The Code on and off the field

Source: Appeal-Democrat, Marysville, Calif.迷你倉Aug. 24--Wheatland High football coach Neil Stinson walks around with a wristband that simply reads, "The Code."Everyone involved with the Pirates athletic program knows about this code. The players and coaches can recite it verbatim. The school's mascot, PIRATES, also serves as an acronym for Pride, Integrity, Respect, Attitude, Teamwork, Excellence and Sportsmanship. The Code is not just reserved for student-athletes. All students on campus, teachers, faculty and coaches live by these virtues.Inside the school's gymnasium is a larger banner on the wall that instructs anyone who reads it to "Honor the Code.""You have to have sportsmanship and respect for everybody," said senior quarterback Jackson Hopking. "The Code helps out everybody and let's us know what it's all supposed to be about."The Wheatland football players and coaches spoke in depth this offseason about The Code and how it relates to what the team is trying to accomplish on the field.Stinson believes his team can improve on each of those six areas this season."We really emphasized that this offseason and wanted to make a c自存倉mmitment to each other," Stinson said. "This is about a team and a family, not individuals, and we really believe strongly in that."Stinson added his team had difficulty overcoming adversity at times last season. He hopes the coaches, along with the senior leaders, can transfer the six attributes of The Code to the field this season, especially teamwork and integrity."We talked a lot about how much pride we take in going out on to that field and putting on a Wheatland uniform," Stinson said. "The culture at this school is all about doing things the right way."In the classroom, on the field, off the field, in the hallways, all Pirates are held to The Code no matter where they are.All they need to do is look at their wrists every day and see it as a daily reminder of what it means to be a Pirate."It helps you push each other and yourself," said senior Jordan Samson. "We use it in school every day and are always trying to bring it out to the field."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Appeal-Democrat (Marysville, Calif.)
